Headwaters is committed to providing a tailored, meaningful psychological treatment experience that’s grounded in science. Utilizing the most advanced research on the disease of addiction, the Center for Brain Recovery (CBR) is a central part of our treatment program. As thought leaders in our field, we are expanding the conversation about brain health by offering evidence-based care to our patients as well as their loved ones.

Headwaters’ CBR interventions and therapeutic programs are individualized and designed to address the specific pressures that high-powered professionals and celebrities face, particularly in the areas of family relations and work-life balance.

Evidence-based interventions

Our evidence-based neurological interventions for substance use and co-occurring disorders include:

  • Comprehensive psychological testing
  • Sophisticated medical care
  • Therapeutic neurofeedback and biofeedback
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Meditation and mindfulness training
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
Our CBR team is dedicated to the integration of clinical and medical interventions for healing and restoration. We always take into account the possibility of co-occurring disorders such as depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that are all too common with substance use disorders.

Integrated team approach

Headwaters’ multidisciplinary team includes highly credentialed psychiatric and psychological staff members who provide comprehensive services to each patient in a way that addresses specifically the worldview of our affluent and powerful clientele. Our CBR methodology provides cognitive restructuring based on leading-edge research on the brain’s capacity to restructure and renew itself.

Our multidisciplinary team of professionals collaborates closely with patients. Also involved are families and, if requested by the patient, key members of their chosen circle of influence that may include wealth management advisors, partners, executive assistants, managers or attorneys. Together, we work as a team to find solutions to a variety of daily challenges in our patient’s neurological and psychological development so that long-term, successful recovery becomes a reality.

Shared challenges

Common neurological and psychological challenges present with addiction are:

  • Attention Deficit Disorders
  • Post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD)
  • Mood disorders
  • Bipolar disorders
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD)
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Depressive disorders
  • Other neurological and spectrum disorders
  • Evidence-based modalities

Advanced psychological testing

The Headwaters CBR model uses a broad, integrative approach to assessment and treatment planning. Our ongoing consulting and case-management services help identify and secure effective treatment for each of the challenges mentioned in the list above. Along with one-on-one clinical interviews with Headwaters’ on-staff clinical psychologists, our CBR team leverages advanced psychological testing such as:

  • Personality Inventory for DSM-5—Brief Form (PID-5-BF)
  • CNS VS (Central Nervous System Vital Signs)
  • MMPI-2 (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2)
  • Million Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI)
  • PsychEval Personality Questionnaire (PEP-Q)
  • *Refer out for full neuropsychological evaluation*

Practical interventions

The CBR department has specific interventions that assist in breaking down the many barriers and daily distractions that take away a patient’s ability to focus on recovery.

These interventions include:

  • Stress and anxiety management including neurofeedback, biofeedback, and breathing techniques
  • Sleep program protocols to help patients learn to sleep naturally
  • Neurotherapy with the BioAcoustical Utilization device (BAUD) for pain, depression, anxiety, smoking cessation, and negative cognitions
  • Self-esteem work including positive affirmations and assertiveness training
  • Mindfulness training including guided meditation and neurofeedback

Healing for trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

When stressful life experiences become embedded in one’s mind and affect their work and life balance, as well as the lives of their loved ones, trauma or PTSD may be present. This challenge is especially common with the high-profile executive patients and well-known clientele we care for at Headwaters. Many people with trauma often turn to alcohol or drugs for relief.

PTSD symptoms can include:

  • Withdrawal from others
  • Unwarranted anger
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Dissociative mental experiences
  • Inability to function in daily life
  • Panic or overreaction to events
  • Insomnia
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Involuntary thoughts about a traumatic event

Treatment modalities for PTSD

Headwaters CBR staff members collaborate with each patient’s multidisciplinary treatment team to review a patient’s progress and identify any further psychological issues that may emerge during treatment. Our therapists select evidence-based modalities specific to our clienteles’ unique needs. Additionally, we incorporate holistic stress and anxiety management tools such as biofeedback and breathing techniques, along with neurotherapy, mindfulness training, and sleep program protocols.
