Addiction and Health

Substance use disorders can cause or exacerbate chronic and other health issues. Aging and early-onset addiction multiply the risk factor for co-occurring physical and mental illnesses. Alcohol and drug use affects the body in so many adverse ways that addiction-informed medical treatment is often necessary for reversal or reduction of health issues.

Integrated Treatment

Medical conditions occurring alongside addiction must be treated at the same time as addiction, in the same place, with the same team of dedicated professionals. As clients move through detox and residential care, Headwaters’ multidisciplinary team keeps a close eye on both mental and physical health. We thoroughly monitor and address chronic health conditions during each person’s stay. As discharge approaches, our team provides continuing care recommendations for ongoing medical care, with a unique focus on self-care practices related to health and wellness.

Responsible Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for Opioid Addiction

Opioid use affects every dimension of a person’s wellbeing, and because opioid use disorders are very difficult to break, many people struggle to make it past the early days of recovery. Medical research definitively indicates that those with opioid addictions – whether to legal or illegal substances – benefit from some form of recovery-oriented medication during the treatment process. We offer buprenorphine for acute withdrawal symptoms and naltrexone for long-term recovery support.

Understanding Providers

Headwaters’ team matches innovative and evidence-based addiction treatment practices with medical care from providers who truly understand addiction. With decades of addiction treatment experience, our Chief Medical Officer understands how addiction impacts the body, mind, and spirit. Our multidisciplinary team of nurses and medical professionals have extensive addiction treatment experience and receive ongoing training to improve their understanding of co-occurring disorders, trauma, and recovery. Each client at Headwaters receives personalized, high-quality care informed specifically by their substance use diagnosis.
